New SUVs For Government Ministers
Reports have surfaced that more $117 million was spent by the Andrew Holness Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration to purchase 15 SUVs for ministers between March 2016 and March this year. This despite Prime Minister Holness’ directive that no vehicles were to be sold to outgoing People’s National Party (PNP) ministers, following their February 2016 General Election loss. However, some former PNP ministers of the previous Portia Simpson Miller administration had already made arrangements to purchase vehicles assigned to them before Mr. Holness had issued the directive.
In 2012, then Information Minister Sandrea Falconer disclosed that the previous PNP Government had purchased 16 SUVs at a cost of over $60 million for government ministers triggering much criticism. Vehicles assigned to government ministers can no longer be purchased before an election.
