Fenton Ferguson Should Be Fired Says Young Jamaica
Young Jamaica the youth arm of the Jamaica Labour Party is calling for the immediate dismissal of Minister of Health Fenton Ferguson. This after the Ministry of Health disclosed that since the start of the year, 18 babies have died due to an infection outbreak at the University Hospital of the West Indies in St Andrew and the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James
The organization says it is alarmed that 18 babies had to die before the Minister and his technocrats addressed the matter publicly. Young Jamaica says that in any other self-respecting country, the principles of accountability would require that Dr. Ferguson be removed from office. They are also questioning whether there was an attempt to cover up the deteriorating conditions at the UWIH and the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
According to the organization’s President, Howard Chamberlain, “Jamaica is careening from one public health disaster to the next. Our citizens can have no confidence in the words of Fenton Ferguson, he is presiding over absolute chaos and mismanagement, and it’s time for him to go. This goes above politics, and sits at the heart of public safety and productivity. “The Prime Minister needs to fire Fenton Ferguson fast!”, he added.
The Ministry says the infections are caused by the Klebsiella and Serratia bacteria. The country was briefed this morning by the health minister who also admitted that he was only made aware of the situation last Friday, the same day it was reported on Nationwide Radio.
Minister Ferguson said after learning of the situation on Friday, a team was immediately assigned to conduct investigations and provide guidelines for case management.
