Holness To Be Fired As Opposition Leader?
Talk Jamaica Radio understands that the future of Andrew Holness as Leader of the Opposition may be decided at a meeting of the opposition parliamentary caucus scheduled for 10 this morning. According to our sources, a vote is scheduled to take place which may remove Holness as Leader of the Opposition.
The source alleged that as many as 12 MPs may be willing to support Holness being removed. The JLP currently has 21 sitting members of the House of Representatives.
According to the Jamaican Constitution, the Governor General must appoint as Leader of the Opposition the person “best able to command the support of a majority” of the Opposition MPs. Holness narrowly prevailed in the last vote of the parliamentary caucus. This after the Courts ruled that he had acted unlawfully in removing Dr. Christopher Tufton and Arthur Williams from the Senate in 2013. Recently polling has also shown the JLP has lost significant ground to the PNP in recent months.
